There are two things that do strike me about this play, the first being how there are reflections of Christianity in it, particularly early Christianity, and the second involves reflections of the modern rave culture. Mind you it is a tragedy and it does have a pretty bloody ending (in that a number of the main characters end up dead, though the progenitor of change, Dionysus, doesn't, but then again he is a god). Mind you, Greek plays tend to be short, meaning that they last generally only as long as about a third of a Shakespeare play (though when they were performed in ancient times, it would usually be along with three others plays). The Bacchae is about change and about the resistance to change and how our attempts to resist change is generally futile. This in itself is a strange statement since I have never seen it performed (in fact I have only ever seen one Greek play performed, and that was Oedipus Tyrannous and that was by an amateur theatre group). We actually don't have a complete copy of this play though the edition that I read attempts to reconstruct the missing sections (which is mostly at the end) because, as they say, this is a popular play that is regularly performed.

With flirty holiday banter and set on the Queen’s Christmas estate, Royal Holiday sounds like the perfect read for the upcoming holiday season. This idea became the basis for Royal Holiday, which features Vivian, seen in previous novels, and Malcolm, the Queen’s private secretary. A friend had tweeted that it was time for romance about Duchess Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. For reference, Guillory wants to have a glass of wine with Duchess Camilla and get all the dirt, McQuiston wants to first do shots with the late Princess Diana and then “bro down” with Duke Harry, smash some beers, and get in a brawl.įor her newest book, Royal Holiday, Guillory says the inspiration came from a tweet. During the standing room only panel, Guillory and McQuiston shared their love for fairytales and romance tropes and how they liked to subvert them their fierce protectiveness of Duchess Meghan: “I want to fist fight the Daily Mail,” said McQuiston and which British royals they’d want to have a drink with. In September, I devoured McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue. I’ve yet to read any of Guillory’s books, but after Saturday’s panel, they’re priority reading. I planned around a singular panel: Modern Royalty in Romance with Casey McQuiston and Jasmine Guillory. I had the pleasure of attending the Texas Book Festival in Austin in October. She married the writer and translator Tibor Szobotka in 1947. Between 19 she was working in the Ministry of Religion and Education. Torin nodded, his expression becoming grim. “Your people… wait, you’re saying the one who wants me is Kordolian?” The rarer the acquisition, the higher the perceived status of the owner.” “You are a Miss Universe, and your uniqueness makes you valuable. “I’m not talking about that.” Red eyes roamed over her face, lingering for a moment on her neck and lips before meeting her gaze. You can pull up old footage on Earth’s Networks.” A few hundred years ago, it was an actual event.” Miss Universe is a term we use to describe an extremely beautiful woman. Someone had just been killed right before her very eyes, so she probably wouldn’t be able to laugh again for a few days… or weeks. His quizzical expression almost made Seph laugh. “Who’s that? Another of your Virtu-Real stars?” “A rare and valuable specimen,” she quipped. “If they wanted to, they could just shut off the oxygen.” I can’t imagine going out there… into that toxic environment.” A terrible thought struck her. “We’re practically stuck in here,” she said quietly, trying to make sense of the situation. Now, this most beloved and acclaimed novel is reborn for a new age as a gorgeous graphic novel. ‘Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’Ī haunting portrait of race and class, innocence and injustice, hypocrisy and heroism, tradition and transformation in the Deep South of the 1930s, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird remains as important today as it was upon its initial publication in 1960, during the turbulent years of the Civil Rights movement. A beautifully crafted graphic novel adaptation of Harper Lee’s beloved American classic, voted the #1 Great American Read 2018. Could one of these have been this enigmatic man, reported to have last appeared in Seville, Spain, in 1952 when he would have been 113 years old? The trail followed by the author encounters such figures as Papus, Rene Guenon, Schwaller de Lubicz, Pierre Dujols, Eugene Canseliet and Jean-Julian Champagne. Genevieve Dubois looks at the esoteric milieu of Paris at the turn of the century, a time that witnessed a great revival of the alchemical tradition and investigates some of its salient personalities. The true identity of the man who allegedly succeeded in creating the philosopher's stone has never been discovered, despite ardent searches by many - even the OSS (the wartime US intelligence agency, later to become the CIA) claimed to have looked for him following the end of World War II. Fulcanelli, operative alchemist and author of "The Mystery Of The Cathedrals" and "The Dwellings Of The Philosophers" - two of most important esoteric works of the twentieth century - remains himself a mystery. Sheds new light on identity of the alchemist Fulcanelli. Meanwhile, and unbeknownst to Nancy, a big real estate development is under way that would destroy her beloved harbor and new home. After moving out of their opulent home, she and her posse of girlfriends invest in a racing boat of their own to live on, and she teaches them the fine points of sailing. Roger would rather make Nancy's life a living hell than give up his boat. She tells him she wants a divorce-with the sailboat, Bucephalus, part of the deal, too. So when her philandering husband, Roger, is caught in flagrante with an opportunistic widow on their racing sailboat, Nancy sticks it to him. Hermosa Beach housewife Nancy Hadley is no pushover. Romance, betrayal, and an epic yacht race make Carrie Talick's debut novel perfect for fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Susan Mallery. The Oxford Book of Historical Storiescalls her ‘one of the undisputed queens of historical romance.’ Over a long and busy career she wrote more than 60 books, mostly historical, but with a good handful of excellent psychological thrillers too (the Hammer horror film The Witcheswas based on one). She came from a farming family, something which had a lasting influence on her writing, as you will see, but worked as a history teacher before she turned to writing full time. Alison Weir has been plugging away at it, and, brilliantly, was instrumental in getting some Lofts books back into print, while the availability of ebooks and the possibility of finding out-of-print books on ABE or Amazon means that there’s never been a better time to discover her. Lofts is a deeply unfashionable writer who people in the know keep saying should be rediscovered. I had a massive Norah Lofts binge over Christmas.
